Rick's Snow Condition 1 to 10 Rating Scale
Last week we had three days of 40 degree weather. The snow is definitely settling, but we are still grooming the entire trail system. Some sections of the trails are getting iffy, but still groomable. You can still ride out from any of the Lodges at this time. Snow depths vary from minimal coverage up to 50 to 70 inches. The biggest challenge you will have is finding untracked snow. We have been very busy for several weeks now with hundreds of riders. Last Sunday I guided a group from Canada, and had 12 of the top local riders with me. I as well as everyone else were stuck dozens of times in untracked snow. These spots are getting harder to find. We have a forecast of 20 to 60 percent chance of snow starting Monday and continuing through Thursday.

On my 1 to 10 scale, 10 being best here's the following:

Groomed Trails                    9 & 10    Very smooth
Ungroomed Trails                 5 & 6      Rough , but snow covered
Off Trail Deep Powder           5           Plenty of deep snow to be found in the trees and pocket meadows, but a lot of tracks
Off Trail Overall                   6           Can go just about anywhere and get stuck in the process
Boondocking                       7            Excellent opportunity to ride through the trees. Deeper snow in the woods
Cornice Jumping                  4            Need fresh powder to land in.

Hope this helps.

After coffee and a breakfast buffet at Arrowhead Lodge, a Celebration Of Life Memorial Ride, led by Paul Hando and the Big Horn Mountain Snomads Snowmobile Club, rode to the Wood Chuck Warming Hut Saturday; December 12.    Paul Floretta ( December 12, 1948 to October 20, 2009 ) loved to snowmobile, and loved the Big Horn Mountains.  The phrase he liked to quote was... Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.  Ralph Waldo Emerson.    After the ride, everyone enjoyed a BBQ at Arrowhead Lodge, sponsored by the Kraft Family and Craftco ( the company in Sheridan that Paul worked for for over 20 years ).  Thank you to all who participated.   We'll miss our friend!
